How to Fakie Frontside Nosegrind

A frontside nosegrind from fakie. Surprisingly easy to balance on a short box. Taught by Tony Clark.

Watch on YouTube

My friend Tony Clark taught this one. Fakie nosegrinds are surprisingly easy to balance, at least on short boxes.

Before you start

Get the regular frontside nosegrind first. You’ll also want a solid fakie ollie, since that’s how you pop into it.

Approach

Don’t ride at the box diagonally. Ride parallel to it and pretty close. Coming in from farther away just makes you work harder for no reason.

Foot position

Set your feet up like a fakie ollie.

How to do it

  1. Roll fakie, parallel and close to the box.
  2. Pop a fakie ollie onto the box.
  3. As you pop, slide your foot up so it ends up covering the bolts instead of going all the way back.
  4. Grind on the front truck.
  5. To get out, push it a little to get it over the end of the box, like you would on a 50-50.

Troubleshooting

The tail scrapes

If your foot goes all the way back, you’ll tend to scrape your tail. Slide it until it covers the bolts, and you’ll get a nice clean grind.

You can’t hold it very long

These get hard for long distances, more than about five feet, unless you learn to balance them really well. Learning switch manuals would help with that. For short grinds, you’ll be fine.

What’s next

If you like grinding on one truck, try the frontside 5-0 or the crooked grind.

Fakie Frontside Nosegrind FAQ

How should I approach a fakie frontside nosegrind?

Ride parallel to the box and close to it. Don't come in at an angle. It's unnecessary.

Why does my tail scrape on fakie nosegrinds?

When you pop, slide your foot so it covers the bolts instead of going all the way back.

How long can I hold a fakie nosegrind?

Short ones are surprisingly easy to balance. Anything more than about five feet is hard unless your balance is really good. Switch manuals help.
