Skateboard Gear for Beginners: What I’d Buy

Getting ready for Shred School 101 and not sure what to buy? There are two ways to go: buy a complete skateboard and start rolling, or pick each part yourself. If you just want to start learning, get the complete.

Easiest start: a complete skateboard

A complete board comes with the deck, trucks, wheels and bearings already put together, so you can start lesson 1 as soon as it arrives. This is the one I’d point a beginner to.

CCS Logo Natural complete skateboard. Check the listing for the deck width options.

Build your own

If you’d rather choose the parts, you need four things: a deck, a set of trucks, a set of wheels and a set of bearings. Match the truck size to your deck width, and the bearings go inside the wheels.

Deck

Powell Peralta Andy Anderson Hydrant deck. Check the listing for the width, then pick trucks to match.

Trucks

Wheels

Check each listing for wheel size and hardness.

Bearings

Bones Reds bearings, which come with the spacers and washers.

Protect yourself

Get a helmet and pads before you start trying tricks. Falling is part of learning, and protection makes the early falls a lot easier to get up from.
