How to Shove It Underflip

A shove it that your back foot flips back under. The easiest way into late tricks. Taught by Tony Clark.

Watch on YouTube

My friend Tony Clark taught this one. The shove it underflip is one of his signature moves, and it’s one of the easiest ways to get started with late tricks.

Before you start

You need a pop shove it. If you don’t have that yet, start there.

Foot position

Set up like a shove it, except your back foot hangs off more. Tony has the toe hanging off and curved in a little.

How to shove it underflip

  1. Shove it with your back foot.
  2. Keep the board flat. Tony’s main point: don’t let the shove it turn into something like an impossible. You’ll just kick the board down and hurt your toe really badly.
  3. Bring your back foot up and pull up. Don’t kick out, or you’ll hit your ankle. Pull your foot up toward your knee, like you’re pulling it toward your head.
  4. Land with your feet spread apart, and try to roll away smooth.

Troubleshooting

Landing with your feet together

This was Tony’s problem when he learned it. His feet ended up close together and he’d land badly. Spread your feet apart after the flip.

Pivoting on the landing

Some people pivot one way or the other because they lean so far trying to underflip it. Stay centered over the board and land over the bolts as best you can.

What’s next

The kickback is another underflip from the freestyle side, and the semi flip is another late flip worth trying.
