How to No Comply Varial Heelflip

A no comply with a varial heelflip, and a stepping stone into the bigger no comply tricks.

Watch on YouTube

This is a really fun trick. It’s also a good stepping stone into a big world of no comply tricks, especially the bigspin version.

Before you start: the no comply frontside shove it

You should at least be familiar with the no comply frontside shove it. It’s not hard enough to deserve its own guide, so here it is quickly.

  • Front foot: close to the heel side edge, so you can pull it off really quick.
  • Back foot: on the tail where you get a nice pop but it still feels solid.

When you step off, don’t lift your whole foot. Slide your heel off, plant it and pivot your toe around really quick. It’s one fast motion.

With your back foot, pop the board as vertical as possible. The board doesn’t go around your front leg. It pops up and goes between your legs.

That trick shouldn’t give you much trouble. Once you have it, move on to the varial heelflip version.

Foot position

  • Front foot: the same as always.
  • Back foot: right on the toe side edge of the tail, so you can pop the side down and get it to flip.
  • Body: facing forward a little more than usual. That makes it easier to get the board between your legs.

How to do it

  1. Slide your front foot off like a normal no comply.
  2. Pop the side of the board down, just like a pressure flip.
  3. Push it forward, just like the no comply frontside shove it.
  4. The board won’t go as vertical this time, but it should still be pretty close.
  5. Step back on and land it.

Like any other no comply trick, you can practice this standing next to the board. Do that for a while to get used to how the flip feels.

Helping the flip along

There are two ways to help the flip in the air, and that’s what makes this trick so cool.

  • With your knee. Right when the board is vertical and between your legs, tip it with your knee to get it going a little faster.
  • With your heel. Right before you land, tip it with your heel to get the extra flip, then finish the rotation.

What’s next

This is the setup for the no comply bigspin flip. If you don’t have the regular no comply 180 yet, start there. The varial heelflip is the ollie version of the same flip.
