How to Old School Kickflip

The pre-ollie kickflip: hook your toe under the edge and flip the board up as you turn around.

When you’re first learning old school kickflips, it’s easiest for most people to learn them to fakie.

To Fakie first

  1. Roll with your back toe hanging over the edge of the board.
  2. Start to unwind your shoulders and turn around to fakie.
  3. As your toe hooks under the board, pull it up and let it flick.

If you can already do that much, you’re halfway there.

Fakie vs. forward

There’s a big difference between doing them to fakie and doing them forward. It’s how much of your toe you get to use.

When you do it to fakie, you can use your whole toe. When you do it forward, you only get the corner of your toe. That makes it a lot harder to flip.

Kick it up for extra air

When the board gets to 90, kick it. Catch it between your feet and pull it up for extra air.

That gets especially important when you start doing varial and 360 variations. Once you pull the board up in the air, you can push it to do whatever you want. If your board is bouncing off the ground, or you’re having trouble getting the full flip, practice pulling it up in the air more.

What’s next

The old school varial kickflip builds right on this.

Old School Kickflip FAQ

Should I learn old school kickflips fakie or forward?

Fakie first. It's easiest for most people, because you can use your whole toe to flip the board. Going forward, you only get the corner of your toe.

Why does my board bounce off the ground instead of flipping all the way?

Try kicking it up between your feet when it gets to 90 degrees. Pulling it up in the air gives you extra air and makes the full flip easier.
